Youth Behavioral Risk Factor Surveys

Buffalo County Community Partners’ evaluation process occurs every two years, in which three intensive surveys are administered: two for youth and one for adults. The assessment process with youth involves working with area schools and the University of Nebraska Lincoln’s Bureau of Sociological Research (BOSR) to conduct the surveys in their classrooms. These surveys are collectively called NE SHARP, which includes the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), Nebraska Risk and Protective Factor Student Survey (NRPFSS), and Youth Tobacco Survey. Buffalo County Community Partners does an oversample for the YRBS and NRPFSS to ensure Buffalo County has a real portrayal of youth in our community.

The strategy of evaluation is very important because without tracking the community’s progress, it is impossible to understand what community based activities are impacting health. Measured past successes include a 65% reduction teen binge drinking and a 45% reduction in teen tobacco use. The data has also helped the Buffalo County Youth Advisory Board create goals using their knowledge and experience paired with statistics. The board’s “Take A Stand” campaign educates youth that students who don’t drink alcohol are in the majority and is backed by survey data showing 80% of youth choose not to drink. Community Partners is also making the first reduction in adult and youth obesity rates due to collaborative efforts focused on promoting policy and healthy lifestyles. The prevalence of obesity (Body Mass Index greater than 30) went from 31.1% in 2010 to 30.8% in 2012. Community Partners has also seen the percentage of youth that report thoughts of suicide rise from 12.6% in 2010 to 14.1% in 2012, which caused concern to start a Violence Prevention coalition. These are a few examples of how important the data is for the Buffalo County Community Partners 2020 vision and strategies to assess, promote, and strengthen the health of Buffalo County.
