Here are some ways that you can help your child stop smoking or never begin:

  • Setting an example is one of the best things you can do. Movies and television glamourize smoking, but parents are still the most influential proponent of their children’s lives. Choose not to smoke yourself and be open about the dangers of smoking with your child.

  • If you do smoke and cannot quit right now, establish a smoke free policy indoors.

  • Make sure that the events that your child attends are smoke free.

  • Find out if your child has any friends that smoke. It is important that you teach those ways to say no to smoking or avoid such situations.

  • If you catch your teen smoking, avoid threats and ultimatums. Instead, ask questions and find out why your child is smoking. Talk about what changes in your child’s life can be made to help them quit.
